ETC introduces Adventure in Nature
Adventure in Nature exists to reconnect children and nature and therefore counter the increasing vulnerability of children in the USA to the negative effects and over indulgence in digital screen time and other indoor activities.
Vulnerabilities that children now face in the USA, especially now with the effects of COVID 19, results in more isolation and rapidly increasing mental health issues. ETC is working with educators and mental health counselors to provide remedies for the current crisis.
We are using a program called Adventure in Nature, that not only immerses children in outdoor activities but also helps them develop problem solving skills and connect theoretical classroom time with practical hands on applications. The object is to help develop more resilient, confident children that embrace a more hopeful future.
Adventure in Nature promotes a combination of camping and outdoor skill programs suitable for schools, churches, families and local communities. By bringing children back to nature in a climate of challenge and encouragement, Adventure in Nature hopes to reverse the effects of such things as nature deficit disorder, ADHD, childhood depression and anxiety. Children are suffering from the lack of healthy outdoor activities giving rise to a whole range of mental and emotional problems. Adventure in Nature presents nature as a great teaching tool and source of inspiration, not something to be afraid of or avoided but something to cherish and protect.
Already we have several schools and organizations that are excited about the possibility of working in partnership and helping us develop a sound and entertaining approach to the presentation of nature in the way it was intended.
Below is a short list of the type of activities to expect in an Adventure in Nature program:
Establishing a school green space, garden and playscape.
Environmental Science Lesson Plans, suitable for use in connection with green space development.
Camping programs that stimulate a love for nature whilst developing outdoor skills.
Competitive games that highlight the challenge and adventure of nature.
Field trips to the feature local nature and environmental issues.
Promotion of educational nature materials from conservation groups like Teton Science Schools. www.tetonscience.org
Network with nature groups like Children in Nature www.childrenandnature.org
Adventure in Nature is designed to establish healthy links between education and conservation. Currently we are looking into introducing a program that trains school students in Africa, USA and Australia in how to grow and plant trees. We are thankful for groups like Greenpop in Africa that have pioneered similar programs.
